Operating on a national level they work across professional and organisational boundaries to support Scottish Government policy aims. Diagnostic networks bring professionals together to improve diagnostic services across disciplines.

As part of NSS Specialist Healthcare services, genetic testing services are delivered through four regional centres based in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. These genetics laboratories collaborate through the Scottish Genetics Laboratory Consortium (SGLC) to deliver an equitable, high-quality genetic testing service for Scotland. SGLC laboratories provide both genetics and molecular pathology testing services. A number of 'core tests' take place in all four of the centres.
